Making use of the relation between a quantum defect and a scattering phase shift and using the Coulomb-Born approximation, the quantum defects are obtained for the Rydberg states of He, Li** plus , Be** plus ** plus , B** plus ** plus ** plus . Discussion is given for the angular momentum dependence and the nuclear dependence.
