Difficulties in finding adequate expressions for the differences between observed and theoretical values for some level intervals in the beryllium sequence, previously ascribed to errors in the experimental data, could be the effect of an 'avoided crossing' of **3P//2 and **1D//2 of the configuration 2p**2. A new derivation of the levels involved, based on that assumption, is presented.
