A more direct approach involving retrieval and testing of undisturbed foundation soil samples beneath the Duncan Dam was undertaken. This involves both direct and semi-direct determination of the key soil parameters through an extensive laboratory study involving testing of undisturbed samples obtained by freezing in situ. Results showed that both the triggering resistance and the residual strength if the soil were very much higher than indicated from the indirect approach.
