The tensile deformation of Kevlar fibers has been studied using Raman spectroscopy. The Raman bands shifted to lower wavenumbers and broadened with stress. The shift of the 1610 cm-1 Raman band per unit stress was about -2.5 cm-1/GPa in both Kevlar 29 and Kevlar 49. A simple one phase paracrystalline model is used to explain the observed shifts. The total increase in the width of the 1610 cm-1 Raman band was about 2.5 cm-1 and the increase in width was negligible till a stress of about 0.5 GPa.
