Legal requirements for automotive fuels and vehicle exhaust emissions have become a factor in Europe today. Examples for this trend are the lead content in gasoline, the sulfur content of automotive diesel fuel, and the exhaust emission legislation. This paper deals with the main specification on the properties of motor fuels. The latter part explains the direction in which the legislation on motor exhaust gases has moved. The need to differentiate between the member countries of the European Community and the participants of the 'Stockholm Conference' has been pointed out.
