The thermal stability of polyvinylidene fluoride and the copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene with ethylene of equimolar composition has been investigated. Polyvinylidene fluoride degrades by dehydrofluorination and depolymerization, while degradation of the copolymer is preferentially in accordance with a depolymerization mechanism. The apparent activation energies of dehydrofluorination have been calculated, and features of this process are discussed in relation to the mode of alternation of methylene and perfluoromethylene groups in the chain.
