The requirement and steps of development for optimizing the mine layout in focus of more powerful longwall and development operations is described by example of the D2/C seam at Lippe colliery. Different layouts of rectangular roadways with roofbolting support technology are introduced. The British concept with safety pillars and the North American concept using the multi-entry-system and yielding pillars are discussed in comparison on the basis of tension measurements. As a result the concept for a layout with single-entry and multiple usage of the rectangular roadway is developed.
