The increase in crime in the past 10 years has had a significant impact on the industrial plant. Industrial plants are prime targets for theft, sabotage, and intrusion by criminals. An intrusion detection system can help curb these losses. It comprises the equipment necessary to detect an attempt to breach normal access points (windows, fences, doors, etc. ) and enter plant property or the building interior. This first article in a two-part series discusses system elements and reviews perimeter protection devices. It covers the determination of security needs, system development, fence-connected and freestanding intrusion sensors for outdoor areas, and interior perimeter detection systems.
