Perkins of Peterborough, England, a diesel engine builder, adopts computer techniques to customize products and stay within sight of Japan on prices. The company has concentrated on computerized engine testing and the increasing use of flexible manufacturing storage and extensive use of production monitoring. Perkins has a total of 400 computer terminals dotted around the shop floor and offices. The heart of the system is a comprehensive data base built up over the years.
