When a performance test conducted on an on-line coal analyzer is compared to the results of a mechanical sampling system on the same conveyor belt, knowing whether the two ever agree, or which of the two is right, is not easy. In view of this, a task group within the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM D05.23) attempted to publish a standard guide to the evaluation of measurements made by on-line coal analyzers. This guide contains a number of graphical and numerical methods for comparing analyzer values and reference values. The document, now on its 13th draft will be presented to the ASTM for verification this year.
