STATISTICAL METHODS ARE PROPOSED FOR PREDICTING THE EXTREMEVALUE OF NON-LINEAR STRESS SUCH AS THE VON MISES' EQUIVALENT STRESS INDUCED ON THE LONGITUDINAL MEMBER OF THE SHIP HULLIN OCEAN WAVES. THE METHODS ARE BASED UPON AN ASSUMPTION THAT THE WAVE NORMAL STRESS AND THE WAVE SHEARING STRESS, WHICH ARE COMBINED TO THE EQUIVALENT STRESS, WOULD BE REGARDED AS ABSOLUTELY DEPENDENT STOCHASTIC VARIABLES. THE APPLICATIONOF THE METHODS IS ATTEMPTED FOR A LARGE OIL TANKER.
