The use of an acoustic emission system to conduct a test program involving five different graphite/epoxy laminates is presented. The system includes count-rate and amplitude distribution capabilities, which are interfaced with a computer-based data acquisition system. Tensile test specimens were progressively loaded using acoustic emission to monitor damage progression, and X-ray photographs to confirm damage. The five Hercules AS4/3501-6 graphite/epoxy laminate lay-ups were used. Acoustic emission test results are presented along with X-ray photographs of damage progression.
