Tall steel-pole high-voltage transmission structures have recently come into use in Ontario Hydro for reasons of aesthetics and scarcity of right-of-way land. Special studies have been made in regard to foundation design, the effect of fatigue and impact loading, and the dynamics of the structure during cyclic loading. Welding problems experienced by the pole manufacturer during fabrication required special analysis. This article presents an account of the field and laboratory studies performed to evaluate these foundation and structural problems.
