A spectrum analyzer can be used for making accurate measurements on either amplitude or frequency modulated signals with certain advantages compared with conventional modulation measuring equipment. An analyzer with wide dynamic range allows measurement of a. m. depth as low as 0. 1% and can make standardizing measurements of f. m. deviation using the carrier null or Bessel-zero technique. The methods described can be extended to analysis of s. s. b. and f. s. k. signals and to assess the level of incidental f. m. on a. m.
