This paper describes the approach of an operating Telecommunications Company on the early planning phase for the implementation of Fiber Optic Transmission Systems (FOTS) into the actual telephone network. The selection of an appropriate bit rate, and the selection of early systems applications are discussed. A brief outline of the early involvement by the telco in this new technology is given.
