Port equipment survey

A survey of port equipment currently in use worldwide, from cargo handling to aids to navigation systems, is presented. Among the cargo handling equipment described include Fried Krupp's continuous ship unloaders which are seen to replace traditional grab-type unloaders. Liebherr has a surfeit of orders for its ship-to-shore container cranes. A special system for handling heavy-duty hoses from Mechan was developed to replace an outdated crane. Among several aids to navigation systems, AB Pharos Marine's new 'Phalconet' Radar Target Enhancer amplifies interrogating radar pulses to give an enhanced return. STN Atlas Electronik introduces a new range of radar-based vessel traffic systems incorporating advanced tracking and display functions. New developments from other leading manufacturers are presented.
