While research intensifies on new materials and manufacturing processes that may someday make windows as energy-efficient as well-insulated walls and ceilings, a new production method could make the current state-of-the-art in energy-saving window technology practical for most typical applications. The hard coating is created by spraying an energy-saving metallic oxide compound directly onto a hot sheet of glass, and then allowing the compound to 'bake' into the glass. The pyrolithic process produces a 'hard' low-emissivity (low-e) window that can be cut and framed just like regular glass. It eliminates the need for special handling, which has until now prevented low-e products from capturing a substantial share of the window market.
