摘要
There are numerous applications for radiation processing which require electron beam power levels that are much greater than available with existing commercial accelerators. Linear induction accelerators (LIAs) when combined with magnetic compressor (MC) technology similar to that developed at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, now offer the operating parameters, reliability and versatility required to meet a wide range of industrial requirements. Furthermore, LIA/MC machines offer low operating and maintenance costs in both direct electron beam and x-ray irradiation modes. This paper describes the results of a program to develop commercial-quality LIA/MC systems. Based on hardware being developed and demonstrated under this effort, it is concluded that LIA/MC machines offer a very attractive alternative to other types of radiation sources for a broad range of radiation processes.
