This paper describes a model of the general circulation of the earth's atmosphere which has been developed at the Computing Center of the Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Formulated in spherical coordinates, the vertical coordinate being the Phillips' coordinate sigma , the primitive hydrothermodynamics equations are reduced to a symmetrized semidivergent form. Methods of parameterization of subgrid scale processes are outlined briefly. The method of solution is based on the partition method. The results of a numerical experiment on the modeling of the average January atmosphere circulation for given average January ocean surface temperature and sun declination are presented.
