Knowledge of the up-to-date physical topology of an IP network is crucial to a number of critical network management tasks. Based on the analysis of the existing physical topology discovery algorithm relying on FDB information from the discovered switches using SNMP, a new algorithm is proposed. Our algorithm relying on standard SNMP MIB STP information can accurately determine the topology of Ethernet networks. We have tested our approach in our internal network and verified the result.
