To improve the performance of the conventional Savonius rotor, a model rotor was fitted with auxiliary surfaces of aerofoil and 'umbrella' form to produce six alternative configurations. Wind tunnel tests on the models showed the performance to be improved in only one case; in the other units tested the drag effect of the auxiliary surfaces appeared to predominate over any possible flow improvement. This paper describes tests carried out on six different rotor models obtained by adding various elements to the basic Savonius unit.
