Reference to tungsten usually results in a consideration of high-speed steels, hardmetal carbides or electric lamp filaments. It is not often appreciated that there are many tungsten-based products in vital industrial and scientific applications all of which are derived from powder metallurgy routes. The following article outlines the production routes for the preparation of tungsten powder and its consolidation into products including fine tungsten wire.
