Major shifts in the number, distribution, and value of solar energy technology R&D studies undertaken by utilities are reviewed in this annual survey. Some of the probable reasons are noted and the status of some major solar R&D programs is described. Power generation technologies, especially wind research, have shown the greatest percentage increase in recent years.
