Floating bridge approach span construction

Construction of the land footing and structure began in April, 1985. Work in the water was regulated by a Department of Ecology 'fish window' that restricted pile driving to periods between July 15 and November 1. The bridge abutments and land piers were constructed on either spread footings or WSDOT standard 80-ton (72-Mg) bearing piles. The contractor elected to use the steel pile alternate. The 14-inch (35.5 cm) diameter pipe piles were driven into prebored holes, then filled with concrete. When the foundation work was complete, the land based construction of columns and retaining walls proceeded.
