VALIDATION OF SYNCHRONOUS MACHINE MODELS AND DERIVATION OF MODEL PARAMETERS FROM TESTS.

Results of transient response tests on synchronous generators are presented along with derivations of generator model parameters from data. The adequacy of d- and q-axis generator model structures is investigated through comparisons of model simulations against tests. Transient response tests include load rejections (breaker openings) from zero power factor underexcited and overexcited conditions for identification of d-axis characteristics. Identification of q-axis characteristics is attempted through rejection tests from load conditions which establish exclusively q-axis stator currents. The remaining essential generator model function is the response to field voltage changes. Tests of open-circuit generator voltage and field current response to changes in field voltage are used to identify these relationships.
