Heat transfer to and from slender cylinders, namely filaments, fibers and wires traveling along the axis of vertical duct with heated walls was investigated experimentally. It was found that there is a difference between the heat transfer coefficients of monolithic filaments and of multifilament (multistrand) fibers. The measured heat transfer coefficients are compared with coefficients for stationary wires in longitudinal air flow. Fiber diameter and conductivity of the boundary layer around the fiber control the heat transfer coefficients, a finding with important implications for fiber- and wire-processing industries.
