Measurements of the particle size distribution of meta powders using a Coulter Counter do not always give reliable results. The conventional instrument exhibits for this purpose some basic shortcomings in the design of the orifice tube. This paper shows that some particles were counted several times, resulting in erratic countings. Moreover, when sizing conducting particles, the usual equation expressing the relationship between particle diameter and pulse height has to be modified. A modified orifice tube is proposed. Other improvements such as screening of the sample beaker and homogenization of the suspension of metal particles are also discussed.
