Seven types of dc-to-dc converter are described. These are: single-transistor flyback (ringing choke), two-transistor flyback, single-transistor forward, two-transistor forward, single-ended push-pull, push-pull, and bridge. Choice of circuit for various applications is discussed. Push-pull circuits are recommended for high-performance, low-voltage power supplies; forward converters are suitable for similar supplies at lower powers; and flyback converters are suitable for use in high-voltage supplies and in multi-output instrument supplies.
