11 GHz dual-beam attenuation measurements at BT Laboratories

An experiment has been carried out at BT Laboratories to determine whether slant-path attenuation statistics are dependent on the beamwidth of the earth station receiving antenna. The 11.2 GHz beacon signal from an INTELSAT satellite positioned over the Indian Ocean was received continuously for a six month period in 1987 via two co-located antennas having widely different beamwidths (3° and 0.3°). It is concluded that, for path attenuation statistics up to at least 12 dB, there is no significant beamwidth dependence.
