Plasma-nitriding of Ferrous Materials in Carbon-Containing Gas Mixtures.

Armco iron, CK15 and 34CrAlMo5 were plasma-nitrided in N//2-H//2-CH//4 gas mixtures of various compositions the microstructure and properties of the produced layers were investigated by means of microprobe analysis, X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, and microhardness measurements. The results show that the structure and the composition of the compound layer are affected by the carbon content of the treating gas mixture. The thickness of the compound layer is correlated with the microstructure to be formed.
