Operating problems in visbreaker units have suggested pilot plant runs to ascertain some aspects of process conditions related to feedstock quality and affecting the yield distribution of products as well as their quality. The different effects of increasing operation severity have been determined in terms of net middle-distillate yields and of stability reserve of the residual fuel oil. Evidence is presented suggesting that anomalous performances may be related to possible incompatibility of mixed feedstocks.
