The words 'high-definition television' were first used by the BBC to describe the 405-line transmissions which it began in 1936. Interest is now starting to be expressed in larger television displays, which fill more of the observer's field of view, and hence increase their level of involvement in the programme; indeed when pictures are correctly presented on such larger screens, the experience goes some way towards creating a 3-dimensional effect. Pertinent R&D activities are reported. 10 Refs.
