摘要
The author presents some reasons for foundation failures based on his personal experience. These are: carelessness; failure to use available knowledge; bidding for engineering services; lack of knowledge; minor geologic factors. Foundations can be designed and constructed to perform well. The principal keys to success are the dissemination of existing knowledge to allow the construction of stable foundations, and the support of research and development to continue to reduce the cost.
