Oxygen diffusion in titanium carbide was measured in a large range of temperatures. From the comparison of the oxygen and the carbon diffusion coefficients, it is assumed that oxygen diffuses like carbon, by an octahedral vacancy mechanism. The physical significance of the difference between the activation energies is considered. The results of this study emphasize that the foremost stage of the titanium carbide oxidation is the formation of an oxicarbide. This should be taken into account to explain the oxidation mechanisms of TiC.
