Selected principles of fatigue crack growth are applied to the determination of the life of welded joints of structural steel. A method of determining the material constants required for calculating the rate of growth of these cracks is proposed. Formulas for determining the stress intensity factors for typical cracks encountered in welded joints are presented. Practical examples of the use of the proposed method to calculate the life of structural elements are cited.
