SOME INTERNATIONAL COMPARISONS OF EDUCATION AND TRAINING OF PROFESSIONAL ENGINEERS.

Some international comparisons are presented of the education and training of engineers, stressing the importance of obtaining an historical perspective and arguing that technical education institutes influence a nation generally, outside their immediate engineering and industrial fields. Recent trends are mentioned, as well as the establishment of the Teaching Company scheme in Britain aimed at encouraging close collaboration between industry and university engineering departments in improving manufacturing performance and in giving education and training for manufacturing engineers. The education and training required by manufacturing engineers and production managers are explored more generally, particularly whether their education should be 'management-enriched' or 'engineering-enriched', the conclusion favoring the latter.
