The author briefly discusses the principles and the operation of retreat mining, and then analyzes the trends in longwall retreat faces during the 1967-76 period in the United Kingdom. The layout of retreat workings, ventilation considerations, and the mechanization of retreat faces are also discussed, and the future outlook for this method of coal mining is indicated.
