A modified version of the Han-Powell algorithm is used in the optimal dynamic dispatch of thermal generations. The dynamic dispatch is particularly useful both in the daily load pick-up or drop-down periods and in the very short term dispatch. A discrete formulation of the dispatch problem is adopted by subdividing the time horizon into a finite number of intervals. Dynamic constraints on the rate of change of the MW output of thermal ordinary static dispatch (suitably modified to take into account the load varying in time). Furthermore, costs associated with more or less quick changes of the thermal generation are included in the model. These additional costs account for extra fuel consumption resulting from transient off-nominal values of temperatures and pressures inherent in the act of passing from one operating point to another.
