Analysis of the leaky bucket algorithm for bursty sources in ATM networks

Statistical multiplexing can be used to gain higher bandwidth efficiency, but it is important to properly control the input traffic to avoid severe network congestion. The leaky bucket algorithm has been proposed as an important method in the rate-based traffic control in ATM networks. The leaky bucket algorithm for bursty sources in ATM networks was analysed and the analytical expression of the relation among the leaky bucker performance, the leaky bucket parameter and the statistical parameters of input traffic was obtained. The results of computer simulation show that it is in concordance with the theoretical analysis.
