摘要
Defect characerization by ultrasonic waves (determination of flaw size, shape, etc. ) requires the understanding of the basic physical mechanism of elastic wave interaction (scattering) with finite boundaries. For an incident longitudinal wave the scattered longitudinal and shear wave from ellipsoidal cavities embedded in metal is analyzed. Experimental result is compared to an elastic scattering theory based on the Born approximation. Key parameters of the scattered ultrasonic waves are identified which can be used to characterize flaws.
