The results of studies of the anisotropy of the uniaxial compressive strength of two sandstones, two clayey loams, and two mudstones from mines of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin are presented. The results of previous studies by other authors, of the anisotropy of the uniaxial compressive strength of various sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous rocks are briefly generalized. A classification of the strength anisotropy of layered rocks is presented, and an analysis is made of the suitability of various analytic criteria for estimating the strength of anisotropic rocks.
