The Paulo Afonso IV hydroelectric power plant is making an important contribution to safeguarding power supplies in northeastern Brazil. With unit ratings of 486 MVA, the generators installed here are the most powerful in Brazil, with the exception of those at Itaipu. The article describes the special design features of these machines.
