Distinctions are blurring between various types of desktop machines as users demand more power at a lower price. Low-end workstations offer increasingly better price/performance ratios, even as PCs become more powerful. New, 32-bit PCs match workstation capabilities, while new architectures and operating systems are revitalizing old chips. The paper describes some of the systems currently available in desktop computers. The paper examines the greater power of recent PC based CAD/CAM systems, and discusses price considerations.
