Driving though a long road tunnel imposes a strain on the motorist which is only alleviated when he drives out the other end. Sophisticated safety measures in the St Gotthard Tunnel over its 17-km length through the Alps in Europe are designed to relieve the psychological burdens of the trip. The article discusses these measures, including traffic monitoring and control, ventilation, fire protection, emergency services, and others.
