The formation of British Coal's Headquarters Technical Department (HQTD) in September 1985 introduced a new approach to the provision of solutions to the industry's problems. The paper shows, with examples from Nottinghamshire Area, how the involvement of Headquarters Technical Department engineers and Area engineers produces benefits. Coalface machines, AFCs, powered supports, heading machines and transport equipment are considered. The paper highlights problem areas which demand further effort in continuing progress toward optimum engineering in mining equipment.
