Effect of exchange reactions in fluoride-chloride melts on interfacial tension

An interfacial tension of system of liquid lead-fused chloride + fluoride of alkali metals (up to 20 molar %) is investigated experimentally. The measurements are carried out by the method of maximum pressure in the gas bubble at 973 K. Decreasing in lead surface tension in contact with Li and Cs chlorides at addition of Na fluoride is revealed. This is caused by availability of surface-active Na2F+ cations in fused chlorides. The chloride-fluoride fused mixtures are used widely in metallurgy, welding, and brazing with flux.
