The article reviews the history, current state-of-the-art and future trends of development in the field of surface mining. The main topics discussed cover the limits of scale of surface mining operations performed by walking draglines and bucket wheel excavators; mine design and planning for strip, terrace and open-pit mining; ground preparation including drilling and blasting operations; loading and haulage equipment; and surface mine electric power systems.
