HOMOGENEOUS POLYMERIZATION OF VINYL MONOMERS INITIATED WITH KOJIC ACID CHELATE.

In the solution of benzene and methanol, some kinds of vinyl monomer were polymerized in the presence of triphenylmethoxymethyl kojic acid (TRKA), metallic salts and carbon tetrachloride at 85 degree C. The effects of the added amount of TRKA, metallic salts, carbon tetrachloride and vinyl monomers on the conversion were studied. In the case in which cupric acetate is in excess at the equivalent point, methyl methacrylate and acrylonitrile(AN) could be polymerized but styrene not. The polymerization is verified to proceed through a radical mechanism. The initiation mechanism is discussed.
