Toluene-3,4-dithiol, particularly as the zinc derivative, has long been the preferred reagent for the colorimetric determination of molybdenum in geochemical survey samples. It reacts with Mo(VI) to form a green complex that is extractable into organic solvents, such as amyl acetate. The method was used during a drainage geochemical survey. Details of the method, reagents and apparatus are given. The results that were obtained by use of the rapid method are shown.
