The Zener effect of second-phase particles on the movement of a grain boundary has long been applied to the case of grain growth. The approximations involved are examined in detail and the treatment is improved on some points. A correction factor which depends upon the volume fraction is introduced and evaluated. The theoretical predictions are tested with previous information on grain growth in austenite and new information on grain growth in ferrite. The theory is essentially confirmed and, in particular, a variation of the correction factor with the volume fraction of the second phase seems to be established.
